GA director message about suspension of CLAMP committee
May 5, 2010,
Message from GA Director Joyce Turner
As you may have heard, the Legislature included a proviso in
2010 supplemental capital budget that mandates the suspension of
the Capitol Lake adaptive management planning process. I want to
let you know that I am following up on that mandate and am
bringing the CLAMP committee to a close.
This budget decision was one of 70 different state
commissions and committees that the Legislature and the Governor
chose to end.
The Legislature did include authorization for General
Administration to spend a remaining $50,000 for the rest of the
current biennium to deal with invasive species at the lake. This
is important funding, especially in light of the recent
discovery of New Zealand mudsnails. Our response to the
mudsnails is being developed in close collaboration with an
interagency task group that includes many CLAMP members.
Even with the suspension of CLAMP, I expect to consult with
your governments and agencies at various times on the issues
that continue to affect the future of the lake. I value the
partnerships and shared expertise that have been so critical to
CLAMP’s accomplishments over the years. Our community has
benefited greatly from CLAMP’s hard work, commitment and
dedication.
Next steps for lake management As you know, the majority of
the CLAMP committee recommended that Capitol Lake return to an
estuary. This recommendation is the result of the completed
studies successfully overseen by the committee over many years.
We appreciate the CLAMP committee’s time and dedication to this
long and, at times, difficult process.
I am well aware of the various positions held by different
parties about the future management of Capitol Lake. Since I
have only recently become involved in this process, I will need
time to evaluate the great amount of information and research
gathered to date. If there is something in particular that you
believe I should know more about Capitol Lake and the
committee’s recommendation, please feel free to contact me.
Again, I want to maintain the partnerships that have been part of the CLAMP process. These will be invaluable as I move forward in evaluating the next steps for managing Capitol Lake.
